Aaliyah was beautiful, effortless, & humble. I spend days sometimes just diving into my obsession with her. It’s not the kind of obsession I tend to share. I’m 20 now & it blows my mind not only what she accomplished by the time she was my age but how secure in her skin she was. You could feel that through her music or radiating off the screen at you. She was her & not really struggling to be anybody else. Just content being Aaliyah.

I can’t share my love of Aaliyah. These days people get caught up in debating artists & building them up to Demi-God levels. I can’t join #TeamAaliyah online because I don’t have the heart to hear the evil things people say against her & supposedly in her defense. As a young child she struck me as the type that didn’t talk shit about people. Like she had a heartfelt complement for everyone she came across. She radiated love & positivity. I can never imagine Aaliyah being catty or throwing shade. Now that’s not to say I feel she was perfect, but I feel like she was a better person than most people could ever be, and that’s damn close enough. I miss the warmth she generated in me from miles away as a child. I still get that same feeling in my heart when I listen to her music or even when I see a picture or film of hers. She was truly one of a kind.

I get tired of the Lil Kim vs Nicki Minaj debate. You watch those YouTube videos & they say Kim invented all the wigs Nicki wearing & Nicki stole all her photo shoot poses & I just stare at the screen like “-___-” So you mean to tell me a million white bitches posing like that never happened? That Japanese girls, Cyndi Lauper & drag queens ain’t been doing that shit??? FOH. Kim’s always been accusing somebody of copying her even before Nicki came out. She threw Subliminals at Foxy, Trina, Charli Baltimore etc saying they was stealing her style & calling em clones. Fuck all that noise. Kim keep doing you. Nicki keep doing you. I don’t think either one is going anywhere. Kim wants Legendary status but she still wants to play with the young kids & I think you can’t have your cake & eat it too. Look at Mary J. She’s in the legendary lane, putting out music for her fans. She’s not trying to get the youth back. If they come they great if they don’t no Biggie. Hell Kim’s got a great catalogue to fall back on. Feed Team Kim & say Fuck the younger generation. Because on the fashion end Kim borrowed a lot her damn self. Hailing from Philly most people know her as Biggie’s last girlfriend before he died. He was planning a super group with her, Jay-Z, & himself called “The Comission”. After Biggie died her career kinda stalled until she signed with Murda Inc. I always thought they put her on the wrong beats when it was time for her solo tracks. Had Biggie not died he woulda put the right production behind her or had she stayed with Jay-Z. Didn’t help certain old enemies in the industry tried to blackball her. She rhymed with Cam’Ron, Foxy Brown, Eve, Ja Rule, Lady Of Rage, Gangsta Boo & Ghostface Killah to name a few.

Side note: She’s the reason Jay-Z stabbed Lance “Un” Rivera in that night club. Apparently she was dating Jay & Un wanted her or vice versa. She’s a part of 90s Hip-Hop history.
